Dear CHHS Parents and Guardians,

 

We are in our second year of offering CHAT as a further tool to improve flexible student learning and relationships, so it is still somewhat new.  We always want to do our best to ensure that you are informed and in the loop with important events and initiatives at CHHS. The following information will share with you the purpose of CHAT, some activities that teachers are facilitating for students during this time, and other helpful information about CHAT. Please contact your son or daughter’s CHAT teacher or school administration if you have any questions or require more information. Thank you.

What is CHAT and what does it offer CHHS students? CHAT stands for “Crescent Heights Advisory Time”.  2017/2018 is the second year that CHHS has offered CHAT. CHAT class takes place for all CHHS students each day during period 2 – 9:47am to 10:27 pm (40 minutes).

 

Purpose/End in Mind with CHAT:

-Puts in practice the ideals of Alberta Education’s “High School Redesign” philosophy focused on flexible student learning, growth and relationships

-Promotes positive teacher-student relationships- gives students an adult advocate that knows them well at CHHS

-Empowers students to make independent decisions with guidance, regarding their own learning before they are off to the adult world of independent decision making

-Provides students with academic/homework, social and emotional support from their CHAT teacher

-CHAT teachers encourage and support student involvement, engagement, and attendance at school

-Offers students alternatives and flexibility in what, and how students want to learn

-Further builds a safe and caring learning community at CHHS

 

Some of the things that teachers will be facilitating for students during CHAT:

-Building relationships with students during CHAT class

-Inquire to students about unexcused absences and/or low academic performance

-Support and give assistance to students in the areas of homework and learning, as well as social or emotional needs

-Contacting home and/or school counselors with any patterns of concern regarding one of their CHAT students

-Encourage CHAT students to form study groups or mentor each other

-Take attendance daily (attendance to CHAT class is a requirement)

-Connect with students- individually and in work groups. (Some of these student work groups may take place with CHAT teacher permission outside of the CHAT classroom, except on Wednesdays, but still inside the building, under teacher supervision. Allowing for flexible student working spaces is a value of Alberta Education’s “High School Redesign” philosophy)

-Encourage effective use of CHAT time from students, especially those students who are at risk

-Read daily, school-wide announcements at the start of each CHAT class to keep all students connected to news, events and reminders at CHHS

-CHHS school administration also regularly supervises hallways during CHAT class to monitor and promote attendance and positive learning choices by students during CHAT class

-Teachers accompany their CHAT students to school assemblies and events which take place during CHAT period
